conflicts. Recently, the Institute has been focusing its regional security and disarmament thinking on West Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.

UNIDIR's expert group meetings and annual fellowship programme bring together professionals who would not normally have the opportunity to work collaboratively. The Institute's research in West Africa involves civil society in security and peace-building activities.

UNIDIR activities also highlight different regional initiatives and experiences, such as helping to identify best practice and lessons learned in weapons collection programmes. While recognizing that one-size-fits-all solutions are not appropriate, learning about other regions' initiatives can inspire and encourage more open thinking, and thus lead to further successes.
