The UNODA and UNIDIR workshop provided useful background on trends and developments on space security to serve as an issue primer as the Disarmament Commission prepares for the final year of deliberations on its agenda item entitled: “Preparation of recommendations to promote the practical implementation of transparency and confidence-building measures in outer space activities with the goal of preventing an arms race in outer space, in accordance with the recommendations contained in the report of the Group of Governmental Experts on Transparency and Confidence-building Measures in Outer Space Activities.”

The Workshop took place on 24 March 2023, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm (EDT) in Conference Room 11, UNHQ, New York.

  • 15:00 to 15:05 – Introductory remarks by Mr. Adedeji Ebo, Director and Deputy to the High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, UNODA

  • 15:05 to 15:50 – Session 1: A primer on the physics of space security (Mr. Michael Spies, UNODA)

  • 15:50 to 16:30 – Session 2: The disarmament and international security dimensions of space law and policy (Ms. Almudena Azcárate Ortega, UNIDIR)

  • 16:30 to 17:15 – Session 3: Threats to space systems and proposals to address them (Ms. Anuradha Damale-Day, BASIC)

  • 17:15 to 17:55  – Session 4: Transparency and confidence-building measures in outer space activities (Ms. Nivedita Raju, SIPRI)

  • 17:55 to 18:00   – Closing remarks
