In July 2020, UNIDIR launched an informal dialogue on nuclear disarmament, nuclear deterrence, and strategic arms control, bringing together a diverse group of policymakers, experts, and civil society representatives from around the world. In September 2021, the Institute issued a findings paper that showcases key propositions, findings, and recommendations from the dialogue. Together, its points offer a promising vision and the elements from which to craft an agenda for enhanced global collaboration to reduce today’s nuclear dangers.
This side event to the UN First Committee looked to contribute to informed discussion on today’s broad nuclear challenges: consolidating the non-use of nuclear weapons, recrafting strategic arms control for the 21st century, and revitalizing pursuit of nuclear disarmament. It engaged some of the participants in the dialogue for their reflections on the discussions, their views on these challenges, and the actions they see as most important or ripe for pursuit now.
