In cooperation with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) is pleased to invite you to an informal virtual briefing to discuss an effort entitled Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) National Assessments and Sub-Regional Prevention and Preparedness Roadmap.
This effort is designed to assist States to self-identify gaps and challenges in national preparedness, with a view to support the development of prevention and response strategies to counter the threat posed by IEDs. Findings from this endeavour can inform States of their priority for the design, implementation, and review of national measures. In addition, where relevant, findings can also inform the basis for developing sub-regional strategies and roadmaps in contexts where: i) IEDs pose a cross-border threat; and ii) affected States express interest in undertaking a national assessment utilizing the UNIDIR Counter-IED Self-Assessment Tool.
UNIDIR is honoured to be accompanied in the meeting by an expert panel to discuss in detail how to utilize the UNIDIR Counter-IED Tool, opportunities to improve preparedness, and research and ideas to advance cooperation. After the panel intervenes, an open discussion will be encouraged in order to understand national priorities and answer any question that authorities may have.
The panel will be composed of the following expert organizations:

• UNIDIR
• UNMAS
• Small Arms Survey
UNIDIR encourages the participation of national representatives and regional experts interested in countering the threat posed by IEDs. The event will take place in English and afterwards an French version of this briefing will also be carried out. In both iterations of this briefing, moderators will be able to answer questions in English and French.
