Regional Briefings on Preparations for the Eighth Biennial Meeting of States on the Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons

UNIDIR and UNODA presented a series of online regional briefings to stimulate thinking and exchange ideas in preparation for the 8th Biennial Meetings of States (BMS8) on the PoA and ITI (27 June to 1 July 2022).

The 2001 Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (PoA) commits all Member States to undertake action at the national, regional, and global levels to control small arms throughout their life-cycle to prevent their diversion to the illicit trade and misuse. Biennial Meetings of States (BMS) are mandated to consider the national, regional, and global implementation of the PoA and its International Tracing Instrument (ITI).

Each online regional briefing began with a panel discussion on key issues and outcomes from BMS7, highlights in PoA/ITI implementation, and civil society perspectives. This was followed by an interactive discussion between participants.
