Virtual Launch: Counter-IED Capability Maturity Model and Self-Assessment Tool

The United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) was requested by the United Nations General Assembly to develop “a voluntary self-assessment tool to assist States in identifying gaps and challenges in their national regulation and preparedness” on improvised explosive devices (IEDs)1. Over two years and with the support of the Government of France, UNIDIR developed an accessible, easy-to-use tool to support States’ efforts to prevent and address IEDs proliferation. The Counter-IED Capability Maturity Model and Self-Assessment Tool is designed to assist States self-identify gaps and challenges in their national preparedness, with a view to support the development of prevention and response strategies to the threat posed by IEDs.

Virtual Launch

Following two expert review meetings, inputs from a diverse global network of stakeholders, and two pilot tests, UNIDIR is pleased to announce the launch of the Counter-IED Capability Maturity Model and Self-Assessment Tool on 24 June 2020, 16:15 – 17:30 (CEST), via webinar. An expert panel will discuss the Tool and its possible applications, opportunities to improve national counter-IED capability, and ideas to advance international cooperation to address IED threats. The panel will be composed of the following experts:

  • Diana Castillo, Colombia, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-Coordinator on IEDs – Group of Experts of the APII – CCW
  • Bob Seddon, UNIDIR, Senior Technical Adviser
  • Gareth Collett, United Nations Development Programme Yemen Country Office, Senior C-IED Adviser
